XRPL Stablecoins
The XRP Ledger hosts a growing ecosystem of stablecoins. From Ripple's RLUSD to community-issued fiat tokens, stablecoins are one of the most active use cases on the XRPL.
How stablecoins work on the XRPL
Stablecoins on the XRP Ledger are issued tokens backed by fiat reserves. They use the trust line system -- an issuer creates the token, and holders opt in by setting up a trust line to the issuer. The XRPL's built-in compliance features (authorized trust lines, freezing, clawback) make it well-suited for regulated stablecoin issuance.
Unlike Ethereum where stablecoins are ERC-20 smart contracts, XRPL stablecoins are native protocol-level tokens. This means they settle in 3-5 seconds, cost virtually nothing to transfer, and are tradeable on the built-in DEX from the moment they are issued.
RLUSD
RLUSD is Ripple's USD-pegged stablecoin. Backed 1:1 by USD deposits and short-term US Treasury bills, RLUSD is designed for institutional use cases including cross-border payments, DeFi collateral, and enterprise settlement. It is issued on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum.
On the XRPL, RLUSD benefits from the native DEX -- instant XRP/RLUSD trading without needing a third-party exchange. Combined with the XRPL's 3-5 second settlement and near-zero fees, RLUSD enables efficient fiat on/off ramps for institutional flows.
GateHub stablecoins
GateHub is one of the oldest XRPL gateway operators, issuing tokens representing USD, EUR, BTC, ETH, and other assets. The GateHub USD issuer (rhub8VRN55s94qWKDv6jmDy1pUykJzF3wq) has tens of thousands of trust lines and is one of the most traded tokens on the XRPL DEX.
GateHub tokens are backed by reserves held at the gateway. Users can deposit fiat or crypto to receive XRPL tokens, and redeem tokens back to fiat through the GateHub platform.
Bitstamp EUR and USD
Bitstamp, the regulated European exchange, issues EUR and USD tokens on the XRPL. These gateway tokens enable fiat trading directly on the XRPL DEX. Bitstamp's XRPL tokens are backed by customer deposits at the exchange.
Why XRPL for stablecoins
The XRP Ledger has several advantages for stablecoin issuance compared to other chains:
- Built-in compliance: Authorized trust lines for KYC, freezing for enforcement, clawback for regulatory requirements
- Native DEX liquidity: Every stablecoin is instantly tradeable against XRP and all other XRPL tokens
- 3-5 second settlement: Faster than Ethereum (12-15 seconds) and most other chains
- Negligible fees: Transfer costs under $0.0001, enabling micropayments and high-frequency settlement
- 13+ years uptime: No outages means stablecoin transfers never fail due to network issues
- Cross-currency payments: The XRPL can automatically convert between stablecoins using DEX liquidity during payment
Stablecoins and CBDCs
Several central banks have explored the XRP Ledger for CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) pilots. The trust line model with authorized access, freezing, and clawback maps directly to the controls that central banks need. A CBDC on the XRPL would function similarly to a stablecoin but with the central bank as issuer and full regulatory control over the token.
